What Is Illinois Shines and
How Do SRECs Work?
The Illinois Shines program was created to support the state’s transition to renewable energy by providing financial incentives to solar system owners. When a solar system generates energy, it also creates Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs), which represent the environmental value of energy generated by solar renewable energy.
Through Illinois Shines, solar system owners receive incentive payments for the SRECS their systems produce. These payments are made to Approved Vendors like Acorn Management Group #856, who have been authorized by the Illinois Power Agency (IPA) to submit projects into the program, and then the savings are passed on to customers. Only Approved Vendors are qualified to submit applications for incentives to the Illinois Shines program. As one of the early Approved Vendors, you can count on Acorn Management Group to make sure you don’t miss a single step – or dollar – in the process.
Illinois Shines SREC Process
Leave it to Acorn Management Group to handle all the details for each of the three steps in the Illinois Shines process:
STEP 1
Disclosure Form and
Contract Signing
The first step is completing a state-generated disclosure form that verifies that the system you purchase matches what is installed. Once that has been signed, you can sign the installation contract.
STEP 2
Part One Application
Next, the Part One Application is completed and submitted to the state of Illinois. This application includes a detailed site map of your solar system as well as a signed REC Purchase Agreement, which authorizes Acorn Management Group to broker the sale of your SRECs to the contracting utility.
Once Part One is verified, your project briefly enters a holding period while waiting for batch approval from the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). After the ICC approval, we submit required proof of irrevocable transfer, preparing your project for the final stage.
STEP 3
Part Two Application
The final step is the Part Two Application, when Acorn Management Group uploads detailed photos of your installation – including panels, meters, and inverters – as well as the Certificate of Completion from the utility. Illinois Shines carefully checks this information against the program application and the PJM-EIS GATS (a renewable energy tracking system) registry.
After verification, your system is fully approved and SREC payments are scheduled for disbursement. Payments are issued on the last business day of the month in which the invoice was submitted. After the initial SREC sale, Acorn Management Group continues to upload your system’s monthly energy generation data into PJM-EIS GATS, ensuring the proper transfer of RECs throughout the eligible lifespan of the system.
